Thomas Alexander SAUNDERS, b. 1857 Kinghorn, Fife, son of Peter SAUNDERS & Ann SHARP; brother of William SAUNDERS; pioneer rancher; 1876 to Falklands [Malvinas]; 1883 to Magallanes; 1884 formed Estancia "Otway" (near Cabeza del Mar), Magallanes; 1888-89 participant in "Great Patagonian Trek" ("El Gran Arreo"), bringing 5,000 sheep from Río Negro to Southern Patagonia; established first telephone line between Otway and Punta Arenas; founder member of First Fire Company, Punta Arenas; partner of Hamilton and Saunders Ltd.; c1900 formed Patagonian Land and Estate Co. (partner John Hamilton); director of Sociedad Rural de Magallanes; director of British Club of Magallanes; member of Rotary Club; benefactor of Anglican Church, Punta Arenas; d. 1928 London; per his request, remains returned to Punta Arenas on the Orita for burial at Ea. Otway; funerales [informe en español]; 1929 memorial ceremony
