Magallanes vs. rest of Chile, Census Trends, 1907-1920
British Nationals

In 1907, Magallanes had the highest proportion of British nationals of any region in Chile. This difference was intensified after World War I. In Magallanes, sheep-ranching remained buoyant, whereas in the northermost provinces the salitre industry was in steep decline. Furthermore, many British males had left the country to join the war effort.
