Tierra del Fuego
Some "British" Geographical Names (Toponyms)

sea channels
few indigenous names here
It is the custom of explorers and settlers to attribute names to the landscape features which they "discover". These may be simply descriptive, or they may honour some person, object, or event. It is not uncommon for the same natural feature to be "named" several times by successive explorers; governments too, for their own purposes, play a part in changing names.

European exploration and naming of the intricate geography of Southern Patagonia was initially the province of ships and sailors, both private and naval. Juan Belza has written an interesting book dealing with the Argentine sector of Tierra del Fuego. The following places with "British" connections are located mostly in the Beagle Channel and Staten Island (Isla de los Estados).
